Welcome

Schabbat Jachdav (pronounced: shabbat yachdav) is an egalitarian participatory service (tfila) in the ICZ: everyone is welcome to join. From the very young to the very young at heart, for a contemplative attendance or for active singing and participation. Everyone can choose where they would like to sit: there is a section for women, one for men, and a bigger on in the middle for everyone (we have no mechitza).

Our tfila has a traditional structure and we emphasize singing together (and listening, for those who choose not to sing). We chant shorter torah portions (aliyot) so that not only the experienced but also the novice chanters can try their hand (or rather: voice!) at this important task for the community. All other parts are also run by us and whoever volunteers for it: from preparing the kiddush, welcoming new faces, and leading prayers, to summarizing the parashah or reciting the haftarah.

For Shabbat services, we meet about once a month. Children are very welcome; there is a play corner and a table with snacks for the kids. On Purim, we dress up and read the Megillah together, and on Yom Kippur we meet in the afternoon for a discussion round.

In short, we like to spend religious moments together in an informal, welcoming, and inviting way. We want to live Jewish religion in a respectful, communal, and egalitarian setting, and we like to bring these to a close (except on Yom Kippur) with a chat over kiddush.
